These idler gears transfer motion inside the Mogul motor drive, and swapping in fresh gears is the standard fix when running becomes rough or noisy. Note that starter set locomotives instead use part 36181, so confirm which loco and motor you are servicing before fitting item 36183. Keeping this three-piece set on hand makes a drive overhaul a simple bench job.
