This reed switch is compatible with Piko's 35269 Loco Magnet (sold separately), which mounts to the underside of a locomotive. When the magnet passes over the reed switch, it closes the circuit, triggering the connected accessory. It supports AC, DC, or DCC input and is weatherproof for outdoor use.
